Hi everyone!
You remember the good old times where you would sit down with the family and play Monopoly for hours and hours? I know I loved it...even though I lost all the time. Monopoly is still around and most people are familiar with it. Monopoly has changed during the years to keep up with the new kids and generations. Monopoly 2011 doesn't work with money biljets but uses cards with an electronic banking unit to record purchases, rent payments, passing Go bonuses and tax payments.
I think it's the perfect way to help kids realize how they should use their money, how they should save for big investments and how they should spent it. Not only do they have to make decisions and future plans in the game but it also allows the parents to talk to the children about money while playing.
Even better is that there are more games like this...think for example about the Catan series. Those games may not be directly linked to money but it does teach the children how to negotiate.
Children and their parents should be encouraged to play boardgames like this. Not only does it strenghten the family bonds, but it also allows children to learn about important issues like money in a playful way without lecturing them in anyway. And kids always love to play games :)
